The City of Wetaskiwin is located at the junction of Highway 2A and Highway 13. Wetaskiwin is 72 km south of Edmonton, 100 km north of Red Deer, and 232 km north of Calgary.

The current population of the City of Wetaskiwin is approximately 12,000.

With more than 600 businesses, Wetaskiwin covers a wide spectrum from retail to service trades, which cater to residents as well those in the surrounding areas. Many beautiful old storefronts have been brought back to their original design, giving the downtown an historic but new look. As well, the Wetaskiwin Mall features convenient "one-stop shopping", combining department and drug stores, groceries, banking and dining. Finally, the Wetaskiwin Auto Mile has given the City the distinctive title of "Car Capital of Canada", with the highest per capita auto sales in the nation.

HOW TO GET HERE:

Highways:
Connecting highways include Highway 2A to Leduc [north] and Red Deer [south], and Highway 13, to highway 2 (west) and Camrose (east). Highway 2 is the main north-south route linking Calgary and Edmonton.

Air Service:
Wetaskiwin has its own municipal airport with a newly built terminal and a 3,900 foot runway. Edmonton International Airport is just 20 minutes from Wetaskiwin, with commercial and air freight services available.

Walking Trails

Approximately 400km of walking trails are waiting for you to explore.  Trails connect the downtown core, with the automile, By-the-Lake Park, and Reynolds Alberta Museum.  A beautiful way to see the sights of Wetaskiwin. 

By-The-Lake Park
Wetaskiwin’s By-the-lake park is a superb day-use facility featuring a 17-acre man-made lake. A 2 ½ kilometer trail system affords visitors the opportunity to explore the natural world, as the park abounds with waterfowl and birds. The park features canoeing, biking and walking trails in the summer. A large picnic area makes this an ideal spot to spend a summer afternoon with family and friends.

Go Golfing!  
There are two golf courses adjacent to the city limits with several more within a 30 min drive from Wetaskiwin. (use current text from Wet. Golf Course and Loons)

Wetaskiwin Golf Course:
Here is a fun course to play! The course is exceptionally well manicured and the food and beverage hospitality is first rate. The Wetaskiwin golf course features a nice mix of holes: short, tight par-4’s, demanding par-3’s and fine par-5’s. Water comes into play on several holes; this course will demand your best game. Loons Golf Course:
Located at the junction of Hwy 13 East and 814 north. Open daily May to October 7am-9pm. 9 hole challenging course, driving range, licensed premises, pro shop, equipment and power cart rentals, RV parking available. For more information contact (780) 352-9821. 

Go Swimming:
The Aboussafy Centre facility features 6 lanes, 25m training pool, whirlpool, sauna, 1m diving board, slide, and play toys.  Public swimming is available from 1-5 on Saturdays and Sundays.

With a full range of first-class recreation facilities are available.  Wetaskiwin has something for all ages.

The spectacular Reynolds-Alberta Museum is unlike any other museum in Canada. Enjoy hands-on activities, artifact displays and demonstrations, audio-visual shows, interpreter-led programs and seasonal special events. Be sure to visit the aviation display hangar, giftshop and Galaxy Café. The Museum is located 1 km west of Wetaskiwin on Highway 13.

Located adjacent to the Reynolds-Alberta Museum. "The Hall" is the only aviation museum in Canada dedicated to preserving the names and deeds of the people who have made a lasting contribution to our country’s rich aviation history. There are more than 156 inducted members whose biographies, photos, and memorabilia are displayed with the aircraft that they loved. Also included in the display are videos and trophies, including the Trans Canada McKee Trophy, which is the highest and oldest award in Canadian Aviation. "The Hall" has a major collection of related material including books, videos, tapes and printed matter.

Nestled away on a scenic and pastoral quarter section of land 14 kilometers southeast of Wetaskiwin sits the Alberta Central Railway Museum. This museum is dedicated to the history of rail travel in Western Canada and has a varied collection of CPR rolling stock. Treat yourself to lunch on a 1920 café car, and then take in a demonstration of the telegraph service used by CP Rail in the 1960s. Be sure to catch a train ride and explore Alberta Central rails!

Historical Walking Tour:Downtown Wetaskiwin
Amongst the many retail outlets in the downtown, are thirteen, turn-of-the-century buildings restored to their original splendor, giving the downtown a historic but new look.

A self guided historical walking tour that takes you throughout the downtown core and identifies many of our historic buildings. A plaque depicting the history is located on the outside of each building.

Two incredible landmarks sit at the west and east entrance of our downtown core. 

Canada's Oldest Working Water Tower (totally refurbished 2005)

 

 

At the west entrance, (Hwy #2A and 50th Street) stands the Oldest Working Water Tower in Canada.  Fully refurbished in 2005 this historic water tower is a landmark that has been in the same location since 1906.  Anyone who resides in Wetaskiwin know your are home when you can see the Water Tower as you enter the city from any direction.

 

 


At the east entrance, (47th Street & 50th Avenue), stands City Hall.  In 2007 the Wetaskiwin Old Wetaskiwin City Hall (an original historic site renovated to function as city hall)Courthouse was restored, renovated, and two new glass additions were added. This magnificent structure proudly preserves the history of the old courthouse while providing the citizens of Wetaskiwin with a new home for city hall.  The majestic splendor combined with modern architectural concepts provides Wetaskiwin with an exceptional asset in our community.

Edmonton International Raceway:
Edmonton Int'l Raceway is North Central Alberta's Only Paved Oval Stock Car Race Track - located just north of Wetaskiwin. We offer exciting family entertainment on Saturday nights from early May to early October. Edmonton Int'l Raceway hosts such events as the CASCAR 200, K-Rock Thunder Car 200 and much, much, more. Wetaskiwin is served by a full-time Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief and volunteer fire fighters.

Police Services
Two detachments of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), one responsible for the city and one responsible for rural areas, are based in Wetaskiwin.
