WETASKIWIN AIRSHOW 2004

World famous Canadian Forces Snowbirds
“Smoke On” at Reynolds-AlbertaMuseum

The skies over Wetaskiwin exploded with excitement on Wednesday, August 4, as the Canadian Forces Snowbirds brought their world famous air demonstration to Reynolds-Alberta Museum.

During the day, visitors learned more about what it takes to be a Snowbird in the theatre presentation “Smoke On” and met team members at special photo and autograph sessions scheduled throughout the day.

Other activities included an opportunity to ride in a “Tutor” jet aircraft simulator or take a vintage bi-plane ride in an open cockpit bi-plane.

Aviation artist, and author, Randal Whitcomb delivered a theatre presentation and author Dan Dempsey, a former Canadian Forces Snowbird Leader, was on hand to sign his book “ A Tradition of Excellence.”

Early in the evening the air action really began! Spectators were treated to the sounds of jets roaring across the skies and watched amazing acts like cuban eights and hammer heads to vertical rolls and inverted flat spins. Over two hours of heart pounding entertainment was enjoyed by over three thousand spectators.

All flying demonstrations began at 6:00 p.m. and included the Canadian Forces Snowbirds Air Demonstration, 404 Squadron CP 140 “Aurora” Maritime Patrol Aircraft and a CH-146 Griffon Helicopter from 408 Squadron in Cold Lake, all courtesy of 1 Canadian Air Division.

Civilian performers Jim Hrymack (Aerobatics) in Pitt S-2B, Ken Fowler of Rocket Aerobatics in a Harmon Rocket II, Jerzy Strzyz (Airshows) in a Sukhoi 26, John Mrazek in his Harvard Mark IV the Pussycat II, Daryl Lowey of Living Sky Aerobatics in his Citabria, and Eric Hansen in a Pitts S-1S, each delighted the crowd with their own special brand of maneouverability. Later Jerzy Strzyz, Ken Fowler & Eric Hansen delighted the audience in a three-ship show affectionately called “Prairie Storm”.

The Reynolds-Alberta Museum was open from 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Many of the spectators enjoyed the displays in the museum during their visit to the air show
