WETASKIWIN CENTENNIAL AIR SHOW 2006

Wetaskiwin celebrates its centennial year with the

Canadian Forces Snowbirds

Wetaskiwin…The Reynolds-Alberta Museum and the City of Wetaskiwin celebrated the city’s 100th birthday with the Wetaskiwin Centennial Air Show on July 29 and 30, 2006.   Smoke, precision, speed and synchronized high performance aerobatics were on display as incredible performers took to the skies. This spectacular event took place over the Reynolds-Alberta Museum grounds, and featured performances by the Canadian Forces Snowbirds Demonstration Team and nine other in-air acts.   The Reynolds-Alberta Museum grounds were open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the air show taking place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Visitors toured airplane displays on the ground and the museum’s airplane warehouse, which is normally closed to the public.   The Wetaskiwin Centennial Air Show was a free event as a centennial gift to the community courtesy of Reynolds-Alberta Museum, City of Wetaskiwin and air show sponsors. Free park and ride service was provided from the Wetaskiwin Mall and Recreation Grounds. Parking was available at the museum, but was subject to $20/car and $10/motorcycle charge. Regular museum admission rates were waived for this special event weekend.   The museum is located two kilometres west of Wetaskiwin on Highway 13 and is one of 17 provincial historic sites and museums operated by Alberta Community Development. For further information, visit www.reynoldsalbertamuseum.com or call 1-800-661-4726.

Highlights of the 2006 Wetaskiwin Centennial Air Show

Despite the poor weather, the Wetaskiwin Centennial Air Show drew enthusiastic crowds over the two-day event. It was estimated that 7,500 people attended. They came with lawn chairs, umbrellas, and rain gear in hand, to show their support of our Canadian Forces Snow Birds and the civilian performers.   Not only did visitors see a spectacular air show, they were also able to tour the Reynolds-Alberta Museum. This museum features a world-class collection of vintage vehicles, aircraft, agricultural equipment and a growing collection of “industrial giants.” Compelling stories are told, of how these machines shaped the lives of ordinary and extraordinary people. A great museum for the whole family.

The 2006 Wetaskiwin Centennial Air Show Committee thanks the following performers for proving us with a terrific air show to mark the 100th Anniversary of the City of Wetaskiwin

BILL CARTER: Pitts Special S2S

The excitement starts right from the word go---with a half - roll on takeoff into a very low inverted pass. During his 13-minute precision performance, Bill smoothly executes tail slides, loops, multiple snap rolls, hammerheads and a mile long, low-level, knife-edge pass. Of course there is the Bill Carter trademarks----both inverted and knife-edge ribbon cuts! Bill keeps the performance right in front of the crowd at all times. The excellent smoke system, announcing and music provide great visibility and excitement-----making this a show act everyone loves. Bill also visits malls, schools or hospitals and is always available for autographs after his performance. http://www.billcarteraerobatics.com/

 KEN FOWLER: Harmon Rocket

The show starts right from takeoff, accelerating to over 200 MPH in less than the length of a 5000 ft runway.  Then into a series of high speed loop and roll combinations at times reaching 320 MPH, a 2000 ft loop, a vertical 8 and a vertical climb of over 3500 ft.  All of this, demonstrating the unbelievable power to weight ratio of the aircraft.  The noise, smoke and speed is sure to get your attention and keep it.  http://www.rocketaerobatics.com/

JOHN MRAZEK: Harvard Mark IV

Veteran airshow pilot and performer John Mrazek along with his Harvard Mark IV, "Pussycat II," will dazzle audiences, spectators, or anyone watching with a spectacular aerial ballet.  With lots of noise, smoke, and skill, John's aerobatic performance will bring the entire airshow crowd to a standstill. http://www.airshows.ca/

CAROL PILON: Wingwalker

Third Strike Wingwalking offers wing-walking displays to events across North America. Their goal is to entertain the socks off of spectators whenever the opportunity to do so arises.
Third Strike Wingwalking is the culmination of Carol Pilon's experiences, work, dedication, and destiny.
After an exhaustive wingwalking career, performing before millions, she has taken her knowledge and skill to front the first ever-Canadian based wingwalking team and to also form a new business platform not easily seen in the air show industry. She is the owner, transporter and caretaker of her aircraft and she also acts as lead stunt person of the team.  www.thirdstrike.ca

ERIC HANSEN & KEN FOWLER: Team Rocket

TEAM ROCKET is a two ship combination with Eric in the F1 rocket and Ken Fowler in the Harmon Rocket II.  Noise, smoke, precision, speed, and synchronized high performance aerobatics at it’s best… a spectacular show!! These two pilots bring with them incredible ability, experience and professionalism.  A must for every airshow!  http://www.removebeforeflight.ca/

BARRY PENDRAK: Super Skybolt

Born and raised in Westlock, Alberta, Barry Pendrak is commercially licensed with over 30 years and 2000 hours experience in a variety of aircraft.  He has had a diverse pilot career that has included water bombing forest fires in northern Canada in a B-25 bomber.

Barry now flies a 300 h.p, fully inverted homebuilt Super Skybolt.  His routine includes, Flat spin, Hammerhead, Immleman, Avalanches, Cuban Eight, Reverse Cuban, Inverted pass, and various loops, and rolls.  www.barrypendrakairshows.com

KEVIN HOPKINS: YAK 55

According to Kevin the best thing about being an aerobatic pilot is that you never have to grow up.  He loves to do airshows, as they are a great way to see the country and meet some fabulous people.
Kevin's Yak 55M is a Russian built airplane.  Russian builts are unbelievably tough and are all about uncompromising performance.  The Yak 55 has a 9-cylinder radial engine rated at 360HP, a roll rate of 345 degrees per second, a climb rate of 3200 ft per second, a constant speed prop, full inverted system and maximum speed of 279 mph on the downwind.  All aerobatic manoeuvres are approved up to -6 to +9 G's.  http://www.removebeforeflight.ca/

GEORGE BERTRAND: Christen Eagle

Why “Chicken”?  Georges got his handle on the very first day of initiation at the Chicoutimi College.  The story won’t be complete unless you ask him personally but the outcome was that his classmate called him “Chicken George” as in the TV series Roots.  The call sign always remained with him, even through his military career, even though it has taken other forms like Chicken Man, POO-LAY, La Poule, Kurczak, Polo or La Dinde. Georges is now the “Flying Chicken” pirouetting around the skies in his pristine Eagle.

Chicken flies a dynamic 12-minute aerobatic performance in C-GEZZ, a beautiful Christen Eagle II powered by a Dick DeMars Lycoming AEIO-360 developing 220+ HP. This very agile dual-seat biplane is fitted with a smoke system and in the hands of a Chicken Man can delight the crowd with astonishing aerobatics.  http://www.removebeforeflight.ca/

ERIC HANSEN -  F1 Rocket

From a flying family, his father introduced him to flying at an early age.  A pilot since 1986, he has accumulated 3000+ hours in over 25 different types of aircraft.  Eric performs solo acts in the Pitts S1S, and is flying his F1 Rocket in the solo and/or in formation performance of Team Rocket with Ken Fowler in the Harmon Rocket II.  http://www.icomunique.zapto.org/coldwaveaviation/

DARYL LOWEY: Citabria

Daryl Lowey, pilot and owner of Living Sky Aerobatics has been flying since 1991 and obtained his commercial pilot license in 1997. The Citabria 7KCAB Rated to +5 and -2 G's, and with its inverted systems, many feel that a better aircraft can't be found for aerobatic instruction.  Daryl takes pride in offering a show that is unique in the industry and has done so with the Citabria.   This is not an aircraft that will overwhelm the crowd with noise and speed, but rather, is an aircraft that impresses the crowd with its low speed grace and ability. While performing at lower speeds, the crowd can easily observe the manoeuvres, and Daryl is able to keep his display directly in front of the show line.  http://www.livingskyaerobatics.com
